The Kizuna Project and the JET Memorial Invitation Program were both started after the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami, and are intended to encourage high schoolers with an interest in Japan to learn more about the country and culture.

These two students were selected to participate in the JET Memorial Invitaton Program, which was created in memory of two participants of the JET Program (also known as the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program) who died in the March 11 tsunami.
