2016 MEXT Japanese Studies Scholarship Details
This is an overview of the Japanese Studies Scholarship. Carefully read the Application Guidelines & Forms attached below prior to applying.

Eligibility Requirements:
Applicants must have been born between April 2, 1986 and April 1, 1998 and be undergraduates at foreign (non-Japanese) universities majoring in fields related to the Japanese language or Japanese culture at the time of arriving in and leaving Japan. Also must have studied the Japanese language at a University for a total period of at least more than one year as of April 2016.
Duration of Program:
Maximum of 1 year from October 2016.
Preliminary Japanese-language training:
None.
Prior Japanese-language ability requirement:
Applicants must have language ability sufficient for receiving education at a Japanese university (proficiency will be tested).
Fields of Study:
Japanese studies.
Placement:
University of applicant's choosing from the "Course Guide of Japanese Studies Program" available at the Japanese diplomatic missions. Please be sure to write at least one university request on your application. Alternately, if the applicant is selected as a scholarship recipient but the schools of his/her choice cannot accept them, the university may be chosen by MEXT.
Scholarship Stipend:
¥117,000 per month (An additional monthly stipend of 2,000 or 3,000 yen may be provided to those undertaking study or research in specially designated regions).
Tuition:
Fees for the entrance examination, matriculation, and tuition at universities will be paid by the Japanese government.
Travel Allowance:
Roundtrip fare provided; *If you are selected, you will be supplied with a round-trip economy class ticket from the nearest international airport to your home to Japan. Please note that the address you write on your application is considered your home address and the ticket will be issued for the airport closest to that address. You will not be permitted to change departure locations.
Examination Requirements for Embassy Recommendation:
Japanese.
