The Culture & Education Department works with the public to promote Japanese culture in South Florida. The Information Lobby is open to the public during regular business hours, and contains many materials related to tourism, foreign policy, and educational and work opportunities in Japan.


The Information Lobby contains a large reference library covering topics such Japanese politics, business, foreign relations, economy, education, cuisine, language, and culture. Publications are available in English, Japanese, and Spanish.


The Video Lending Library consists of VHS tapes and DVDs provided from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Each tape or DVD contains multiple clips on a variety of topics related to Japanese culture, food, technology, ecology, etc... Videos & DVDs may be borrowed for up to 2 weeks with a limit of 3 per loan. Requests for tapes or DVDs may be mailed (att: Information Desk) or faxed.

Enrolling Foreign Children in Japanese Schools:

For parents and guaradians looking to register their children in Japanese schools, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology has published a Guide for Foreign Students Entering Japanese Schools

 

MEXT:

The Japanese Government Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Monbukagakusho or MEXT) sponsors the Monbukagakusho Scholarship to enable foreign students from around the world to earn undergraduate degrees, study Japanese language and culture at the undergraduate level, train in Japanese specialized training colleges, and research a broad range of topics at the graduate level in Japanese universities. Since its inception in 1954, more than 92,000 students from various countries and regions around the world have studied in Japan under the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship program. As of May 1, 2011, there were 9,396 foreign students studying in Japan as Japanese government scholarship students.


The instructions that follow are ONLY for U.S. citizens residing in Florida, wishing to apply for Consulate recommendation. Email jet@mi.mofa.go.jp or call (305) 530-9090 with questions.

The Consulate General of Japan in Miami conducts the initial screening, interview, and tests as part of the application process. Those applicants selected by the Consulate will then be forwarded to MEXT for the second screening process. Please note that the Consulate General of Japan in Miami will only accept applications from those applicants residing in the State of Florida. Applicants must also have U.S. citizenship to apply through the United States. Interested applicants living in other parts of the United States or with non-U.S. citizenship should speak to a MEXT Coordinator in an embassy or consulate who covers that area of jurisdiction. Florida-based applicants may contact the Miami MEXT Coordinator at jet@mi.mofa.go.jp

Japan Exchange and Teaching Program (JET)

One of the most popular opportunities for college graduates to work in Japan is to participate with the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program, also known as JET. The JET Program is administered by the Japanese government, and hires young people to work as Assistant Language Teachers or Coordinator for International Relations. The application season starts the fall with eventual departure taking place in late summer of the following year. For more on the JET Program, please see our JET Program page.
