About Kagoshima CityThe castle town of the Shimazu clan, which held a flourishing feudal fiefdom, is now the bustling modern city of Kagoshima, with a population of 550,000. Historically, Kagoshimahas been influenced by its geographic location, close to both the ocean and Asia. Kagoshima has been a gateway for trade and exchange between Japan and other nations since ancient times, and it was here that the Spanish missionary Francis Xavier first landed, introducing Christianity to Japan in the year 1549. As much as Kagoshima possesses a tremendous wealth of history and culture, it is also blessed with gifts of nature. The majestic symbol of this area, Sakurajima, soars in direct view of the city, above the beautiful waters of Kinko Bay. The city streets are surrounded by green belts that show off their colorful flowers and luscious greenery. The gentle warmth of the ubiquitous hot springs in the entire area also symbolizes the kind and compassionate nature of the people of Kagoshima. Kagoshima City
