2017 MEXT Research Student Scholarship Details

Deadline:
All application materials must be received by Wednesday, June 2, 2016.
In-person interviews will take place in late June at the Consulate-General of Japan in Miami.
Level of Studies:
Graduate level.
Eligibility Requirements:
Applicants must have been born on or after April 2, 1982 and a college graduate (or prospective graduate), including completion of 16 or more years of schooling.
Duration of Program:
Maximum 2 years (April 2017-March 2019) including Japanese-language training.
Preliminary Japanese-language training:
6 months (offered through 54 universities)
Those with sufficient Japanese proficiency are not required to undergo preliminary Japanese-language training.
Prior Japanese-language ability requirement:
No prior ability required, but preffered.
Fields of Study:
Major in field of specialty at a graduate school.
Placement:
University of applicant's choosing. Please be sure to write at least one university request on your application. If you pass the preliminary selection examination conducted at the Consulate, you will be required to obtain a letter of acceptance and admission to the university of your choice. Scholarship Stipend:
¥143,000 per month for non-degree research
¥144,000 per month for Master's courses
¥145,000 per month for Doctoral courses
* An additional monthly stipend of 2,000 or 3,000 yen may be provided to those undertaking study or research in specially designated regions.
Tuition:
Tuition for national universities waived; tuition for public and private universities is paid for by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
Travel Allowance:
Roundtrip fare (economy class air ticket) is provided from the nearest international airport to your home to Japan.
*Please note that the address you write on your application is considered your home address and the ticket will be issued for the airport closest to that address. You will not be permitted to change departure locations.
