Deadline: Wednesday, February 20, 2019

All application materials must be received by Wednesday, February 20, 2019. Applications received after the deadline will not be considered, even if postmarked beforehand.

In-person interviews will take place in early March 2019 at the Consulate-General of Japan in Miami.

 

Scholarship Details

 

Basic Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must have been born between April 2, 1989 and  April 1, 2001; Must be undergraduates at non-Japanese universities majoring in fields related to the Japanese language or culture at the time of arriving in and leaving Japan; Must have studied Japanese at a university for a total period of one year or more as of September 2019.

 

 

Duration of Program: 1 year (starting October 2019). No term extensions.

 

 

Preliminary Japanese-language training: Applicants must have  Japanese language ability sufficient for receiving education at a Japanese university in Japan (proficiency will be tested as part of the screening process).

  

 

Fields of Study: Japanese Language or Japanese Studies

 

 

Placement:

Applicants should choose at least one university of preferance from the "Course Guide of Japanese Studies Program*" (*NOTE: the 2019 Course Guide will be available from January 2019. The 2018 Course Guide has been left for reference purposes only). If the applciant is selected as a scholarship recipient but the university of their choice cannot admit them for any reason, MEXT will decide upon and appoint another university.  Objections regarding university placement will not be accepted. 

 

 

Scholarship Stipend:

 

¥117,000 per month
* An additional monthly stipend of 2,000 or 3,000 yen may be provided to those undertaking study or research in specially designated regions.

      

Tuition: Fees for the entrance examination, matriculation, and tuition at universities will be paid by the Japanese government.

 

 

Travel Allowance: Roundtrip fare (economy class air ticket) to Japan is provided from the nearest international airport to your home.

 

*Please note that the address you write on your application is considered your home address and the ticket will be issued for the airport closest to that address. You will not be permitted to change departure locations.
