As you may know, the recent heavy rainfall in July, resulted in many casualties and huge damages in western part of Japan. In order to provide help to the affected areas, the Japan-America Society of Northwest Florida is raising funds to assist the residents of Pensacola's Sister City of Gero. The US JET Alumni Association has also raised over $6,000 for the Japan Platform’s recovery efforts in western Japan. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all those who have extended their sympathy and support, including volunteers from the U.S. Armed Forces based in Iwakuni.

Here in Florida, the Consulate organized the Japan-South Florida Business Forum with support from PortMiami on July 31. It featured presentations by myself and the five leading technology/engineering companies from Japan, namely, Hitachi, Mitsubishi Electric, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems and NEC. I hope the meeting will lead to more Japanese business activities in the area.

On August 4, 52 graduates from Florida selected for the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program will depart for Japan. I wish each of them a fulfilling experience and safe stay in Japan.

On a sadder note, I will leave Miami to take up my new post in Geneva as Ambassador/Deputy Permanent Representative to International Organizations & Head of Consul Office in Geneva. May I thank all of you for the cooperation and friendship extended to me during the last two years and eight months.

Sincerely yours,
Ken Okaniwa
Consul General of Japan in Miami
