Research

Application Guidelines and Documents
Overview: Application Deadline: May 21, 2010

The Research Scholarship is offered to foreign students who wish to study at Japanese universities at a graduate school level as Research, MA, or PhD students. Applicants are encouraged to research suitable research institutions and advisors prior to applying. MA and/or PhD degree may be awarded depending upon chosen course of study.*

Qualifications Summary:
1. Be a U.S. Citizen to apply in the United States (cannot have Japanese nationality at time of applying)
2. Be under 35 years of age as of April 1 of application year
3. Be mentally and physically healthy enough to pursue study at a university
4. Be a university or college graduate with a 4 year degree or higher -OR-

Have completed at least 16 years of schooling that total the equivalent of a degree from a Japanese university -OR-

Be 22 years of age or older and have taken an entrance qualification examination and has been judged by a graduate school as being equal to or superior in academic ability to a university graduate (must be 24 or older for certain PhD disciplines)*

5. Either be proficient in Japanese or be willing to learn in the course of studying in Japan
6. Be able to arrive in Japan by a predetermined date either in April or October
7. Propose to study in a field the same as or related to what the applicant studied at previous university
8. If applying as a "future graduate," must be able to graduate and provide proof of graduation by date determined by MEXT and/or the Japanese mission the applicant is applying through
9. Not have received a Monbukagakushō scholarship within the past 3 years
10. Not currently registered with or a service member on an active military list
11. Not currently enrolled in a Japanese university with the resident status of "college student" and will not enroll in a Japanese university as an international student between the applying date and the date the scholarship period is due to begin.
12. Not also a grantee of a scholarship from an organization (including a governmental organization within the U.S.) other than the Monbukagakushō
*Note: There are some exceptions and varying requirements for those applying for medical and/or science fields. Be sure to carefully review the rules and guidelines before applying.
Timeline:
  • May: Application Deadline

  • June: Interview and testing at consulate Past tests

  • June: Selected candidates' information sent to Tokyo for the final approval

  • June - August: Selected candidates seek admission to the Japanese university of their choice and make contact with professors in their desired field of study*

  • August: Candidate must submit letter of acceptance from a Japanese university to the consulate*
  • December: Tokyo announces the final decision on scholarship recipients

  • March/April: Recipients whose programs begin in April depart for Japan

  • September/October: Recipients whose programs begin in October depart for Japan
*Note: If candidate does not have a preference for a specific university, the Ministry of Education can determine which university he or she will attend
Award: Award Duration:
  • National universities' tuition is waived; public and private universities' tuition is paid for by MEXT

  • Grantee receives a monthly living allowance of approximately ¥

    152,000-158,000

  • Depends upon date of arrival and purpose of research trip

  • Maximum 2 years, including 6 month language training if applicable
Transportation and Medical: Japanese Language Training:
  • Airfare to and from Japan provided; ground travel must be covered by grantee

  • Medical fee assistance provided within limits of budget
  • If lacking the necessary proficiency, must undergo 6-month Japanese language training program upon arriving in Japan

  • Training provided with scholarship

Undergraduate

Application Guidelines and Documents
Overview: Application Deadline: May 21, 2010

The Undergraduate scholarship is for foreign students who wish to pursue undergraduate studies in a Japanese university following graduation from high school.*

Qualifications Summary:
1. Be a U.S. Citizen to apply in the United States (cannot have Japanese nationality at time of applying)
2. Be between 17-22 years of age as of April 1 of application year
3. Be mentally and physically healthy enough to pursue study at a university
4. Have completed 12 years of school education -OR-

Have completed courses in a school comparable to a Japanese high school*

5. Either be proficient in Japanese or be willing to learn in the course of studying in Japan
6. Be able to arrive in Japan by a predetermined date either in April or October
7. Must choose a field of major from 1 or 2 below:

1. Social Sciences and Humanities

A. Laws, Politics, Pedagogy, Sociology, Literature, History, Japanese language and others

B. Economics and Business Administration

Note: Those choosing "others" may have difficulty finding a university that will accept them

2. Natural Sciences

A. Science (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry), Electric and Electronic Studies (Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Information Engineering), Mechanical Studies (Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture), Civil Engineering and Architecture (Civil Engineering, Architecture, Environmental Engineering), Chemical Studies (Applied Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Chemistry, Textile Engineering), and other fields (Metallurgical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Maritime Engineering, Biotechnology)

B. Agricultural studies (Agriculture, Agricultural Chemistry, Agricultural Engineering, Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine, Forestry, Food Science, Fisheries), Hygienic studies (Pharmacy, Hygienics, Nursing), and Science (Biology)

C. Medicine and Dentistry

Note: Applicants intending to major in the Natural Sciences are required to choose their top three choices from the same course groups (all three must be from Group A, B or C). Since Group C has only 2 disciplines, applicants must also choose one from Group B.

8. If applying as a "future graduate," must be able to graduate and provide proof of graduation by date determined by MEXT and/or the Japanese mission the applicant is applying through.

  • If grantee is accepted to a Master's program during the scholarship's term, the scholarship may be extended. This is contingent upon approval from MEXT
  • Maximum 5 years, including 1 year language training and other relevant subjects if applicable

  • For those grantees majoring in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, or a 6-year course in pharmacy, the term of scholarship will be 7 years

  • If language training is not necessary, the term will be either 4 or 6 years, depending upon the course of study

  • If grantee is accepted to a Master's program during the scholarship's term, the scholarship may be extended. This is contingent upon approval from MEXT
Transportation and Medical: Japanese Language Training:

Special Training/Professional Training

Application Guidelines and Documents
Overview: Application Deadline: May 21, 2010

The Special Training Scholarship is offered to foreign students who wish to study at a Japanese professional training college.

Qualifications Summary:
1. Be a U.S. Citizen to apply in the United States (cannot have Japanese nationality at time of applying)
2. Be at least 17 and under 22 years of age as of April 1 of application year
3. Be mentally and physically healthy enough to pursue study at a university
4. Have completed 12 years of school education -OR-

Have completed courses in a school comparable to a Japanese high school*
5. Either be proficient in Japanese or be willing to learn in the course of studying in Japan
6. Be able to arrive in Japan by the date determined by the accepting university (usually in April)
7. Must choose to major in one of the following:

1. Civil Engineering
2. Architecture
3. Electrical Engineering
4. Electronics
5. Telecommunication
6. Nutrition
7. Infant Education

8. Secretarial Studies
9. Hotel Management
10. Tourism
11. Dressmaking, Fashion accessories
12. Design
13. Photography
14. Other fields of study

Note: Applicants who choose "Other fields of study" must specify their precise desired field in the "Chosen field of study in Japan" section in the application

Note: Those applicants choosing "Other fields of study" may have difficulty finding a university that will accept them

Note: For those choosing "other fields of study," in some cases the application may not be accepted if the period for completing the course of study is longer than the scholarship term

8. Not have received a Monbukagakushō scholarship within the past 3 years
