Monbukagakushō Scholarship for Study in Japan

exchange studentsIn existence since 1954, the Monbukagakushō is a prestigious scholarship offered by the Japanese Government's Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Technology (MEXT). Amount, term, and eligibility vary based on the scholarship type and length of program.

Research, Undergraduate and Special Training type Monbukagakushō Scholarships must be applied for in the year prior to the intended participation date. Each consulate or embassy is responsible for selecting its own Monbukagakushō candidates, and therefore deadlines may vary from location to location. *Note: Initial acceptance by the consulate does not guarantee receipt of the scholarship. The final decision is made by MEXT.

Consulates and embassies make their decisions based upon a combined score from tests, interview, and proposed plan of study.

The Consulate General of Japan in Miami accepts applications from U.S. citizens residing (either permanently or temporarily) in Florida. Those from other U.S. states or territories should reference the jurisdiction map to see which consulate or embassy serve their areas. Citizens of countries other than the U.S. should inquire with Japanese missions in those countries. The Monbukagakushō scholarship is only available to citizens of countries who have diplomatic relations with Japan.
