The Japanese Studies
scholarship is open to foreign students interested in deepening
their understanding of the Japanese language, Japanese affairs and
Japanese culture. The purpose of this scholarship is to promote mutual understanding and to encourage friendly ties between Japan and other countries by means of increasing international knowledge of Japan’s language and culture. |
Qualifications Summary: |
1. |
Be a U.S. Citizen to apply in the United States (cannot have Japanese nationality at time of applying) |
2. |
Be at least 18 and under 30 years of age as of April 1 of application year |
3. |
Be mentally and physically healthy enough to pursue study at a university
|
4. |
Be an undergraduate at a non-Japanese university majoring in a field related to the Japanese language or culture at the time of arriving in and leaving Japan*
Note: in principle, applicants must have studied at a non-Japanese university for at least one year to be eligible
Those majoring in fields other than Japanese language and/or Japanese culture and who wish to pursue studies in Japanese culture and/or language should apply through another scholarship, such as those offered by the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) |
5. |
Applicants must have Japanese language ability sufficient for receiving education at a Japanese university in Japanese. |
6. |
Be able to arrive in Japan within 2 weeks of the date determined by the university (usually in October) |
7. |
Not have received a Monbukagakushō scholarship within the past 3 years |
8. |
Not currently registered with or a service member on an active military list |
9. |
Not currently enrolled in a Japanese university with the resident status of "college student" and will not enroll in a Japanese university as an international student between the date of applying and the date the scholarship period is due to begin |
10. |
Not also a grantee of a scholarship from an organization (including a governmental organization within the U.S.) other than the Monbukagakushō* |

*Note: applicants must not also be applying simultaneously to be a Japanese language/Japanese culture training student, nor can they simultaneously apply through a system that supports short-term travel, such as those offered by the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) |
Timeline: |
- March: Application Deadline
- April: Interview and testing at consulate Past tests
- April: Selected candidates' information sent to Tokyo for final approval
- July:Tokyo announces the final decision on scholarship recipient
- September/October: Recipients depart for Japan

Award Duration: |
- National universities'
tuition is waived; public and private universities' tuition is paid for by MEXT
- Grantee receives a monthly living
allowance of approximately ¥125,000-128,000
|
- Period necessary to complete accepting university's study course, which should be approximately 1 year (scholarship's term can not be extended)

Transportation and Medical: |

- Airfare to and from Japan provided; ground travel must be covered by grantee
- Medical fee assistance provided within limits of budget

- Applicants must arrive with Japanese proficiency necessary to study in a Japanese university
- No preliminary training provided

Teacher Training |

The Teacher Training
scholarship is offered to foreign students with teaching experience who wish to conduct research
on school education at a teacher training department in a Japanese university. This is a non-degree
program.*

Qualifications Summary: |
1. |
Be a U.S. Citizen to apply in the United States (cannot have Japanese nationality at time of applying) |
2. |
Be under 35 years of age as of April 1 of application year |
3. |
Be mentally and physically healthy enough to pursue study at a university
|
4. |
Be a graduate of a
university or teacher training school and have worked as a teacher
at a primary or secondary school or a teacher training school in
the U.S. for at least 5 years in total.* |
5. |
Either be proficient in Japanese or be willing to learn in the course of studying in Japan (prior knowledge preferred) |
6. |
Be able to arrive in Japan within two weeks of a the date determined by the accepting university (usually in October)

Not have received a Monbukagakushō scholarship within the past 3 years |

- Maximum 5 years, including 1 year language training (7 years for recipients in certain medical and/or science fields)
- For those for whom language training is not necessary, scholarship is tenable for 4 years (6 years for recipients in certain medical and/or science fields)
- Scholarship can be extended for those accepted into master's programs during term of scholarship. This is contingent upon successful examination by MEXT

- If lacking the necessary proficiency and if necessary for program, must undergo 1 year Japanese language training program upon arriving in Japan
